In 2022, the global ginger market decreased by -4.8% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In general, the total consumption indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +76.6% against 2014 indices. Over the period under review, the global market hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.
Ginger Production
In value terms, ginger production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a mild curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 35% against the previous year. Global production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
The country with the largest volume of ginger production was India (X tons), comprising approx. 42% of total volume. Moreover, ginger production in India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Nigeria (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by China (X tons), with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in India totaled +10.5%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Nigeria (+7.0% per year) and China (+2.5% per year).
In 2022, the global average yield of ginger contracted slightly to X tons per ha, reducing by -1.6% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, the yield indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, ginger yield increased by +60.2% against 2013 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the yield increased by 19%. The global yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, approx. X ha of ginger were harvested worldwide; reducing by -3.7% against the previous year's figure. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 13%. The global harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

Exports
After five years of growth, overseas shipments of ginger decreased by -12.8% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, ginger exports dropped rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the global exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
China was the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 47% of total exports. Thailand (X tons) took a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Peru (9.6%), India (9.4%) and the Netherlands (6.2%). The following exporters - Brazil (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) - each accounted for a 7.9% share of total exports.
Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Peru (+40.6%), Brazil (+22.7%), Thailand (+13.7%), India (+9.5%) and the Netherlands (+8.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Peru emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +40.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Nigeria (-1.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Peru (+9 p.p.), Thailand (+5.8 p.p.), Brazil (+3.1 p.p.) and India (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while Nigeria and China saw its share reduced by -4% and -15.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest ginger supplier worldwide, comprising 36% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Peru ($X), with a 14% share of global exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in China amounted to +2.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Peru (+35.2% per year) and the Netherlands (+10.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average ginger export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -16.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average export price increased by 21%. The global export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+2.5%), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Ginger Imports

After ten years of growth, overseas purchases of ginger decreased by -8.4% to X tons in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, ginger imports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports reached the maximum at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of ginger imports in 2022 were the United States (X tons), Pakistan (X tons), Bangladesh (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Japan (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Germany (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), the UK (X tons), India (X tons) and Canada (X tons), together reaching 74% of total import. Thailand (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +13.4%), while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest ginger importing markets worldwide were the United States ($X), Japan ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together comprising 31% of global imports. Germany, the UK, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bangladesh, Canada, Malaysia, India and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 37%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Thailand, with a CAGR of +17.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average ginger import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -20% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 30%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Bangladesh ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+9.9%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
