Headphone Market Size

The global headphone market fell dramatically to $X in 2022, dropping by -20.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed a pronounced increase. Over the period under review, the global market attained the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Headphone Production

In value terms, headphone production contracted remarkably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production posted a moderate increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global production hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of headphones increased by 3.3% to X units, rising for the fifth consecutive year after five years of decline. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 69% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports hit record highs at X units in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

In value terms, headphone exports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the global exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

China was the key exporter of headphones in the world, with the volume of exports accounting for X units, which was approx. 76% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Vietnam (X units), constituting an 11% share of total exports. Hong Kong SAR (X units) and Poland (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of headphones. At the same time, Poland (+53.2%) and Vietnam (+32.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +53.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Hong Kong SAR (-15.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Vietnam (+9.9 p.p.) and Poland (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2022, the share of China (-2.9 p.p.) and Hong Kong SAR (-13.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, China ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Hong Kong SAR ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 46% of global exports. Poland lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 2.6%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +35.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The average headphone export price stood at $X per unit in 2022, with a decrease of -11.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 236% against the previous year. The global export price peaked at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per unit), while China ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+13.5%), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Global headphone imports contracted modestly to X units in 2022, reducing by -2.6% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports recorded a pronounced downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 8% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, headphone imports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports by Country

The United States was the largest importing country with an import of about X units, which amounted to 35% of total imports. It was distantly followed by China (X units), Germany (X units) and Hong Kong SAR (X units), together comprising a 24% share of total imports. Russia (X units), India (X units), Canada (X units), Poland (X units), Singapore (X units), the Czech Republic (X units) and Japan (X units) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to headphone imports into the United States stood at +2.5%. At the same time, Poland (+30.7%), the Czech Republic (+23.3%), Germany (+13.2%), Singapore (+8.7%) and Canada (+4.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +30.7% from 2012-2022. Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, China (-1.9%), India (-7.5%), Japan (-10.7%) and Hong Kong SAR (-18.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the United States (+15 p.p.), Germany (+4.6 p.p.), Poland (+2 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2022, the share of Japan (-2.2 p.p.), India (-2.2 p.p.) and Hong Kong SAR (-26.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United States ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported headphones worldwide, comprising 29% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 7% share of global imports. It was followed by Japan, with a 4.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the United States totaled +15.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (+12.5% per year) and Japan (+12.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average headphone import price stood at $X per unit in 2022, reducing by -2.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 32% against the previous year. Global import price peaked at $X per unit in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
