Over the period under review, the global exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, whole fresh milk exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 19%. The shipments of the five major exporters of whole fresh milk, namely Germany, Belgium, the Czech Republic, the UK and Poland, represented more than third of total export. It was distantly followed by France (X tons), making up a 4.7% share of total exports. Austria (X tons), Latvia (X tons), New Zealand (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Australia (X tons), Slovenia (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for New Zealand (with a CAGR of +14.7%), while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Belgium ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 29% share of global exports. New Zealand, with a CAGR of +17.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average whole fresh milk export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 14% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 18%. The global export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($X per ton), while Latvia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 21%. Global imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Germany represented the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded 25% of total imports. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), Italy (X tons), China (X tons), Ireland (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and Belgium (X tons), together creating a 40% share of total imports. The following importers - the UK (X tons), Croatia (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Russia (X tons) - together made up 8.7% of total imports.

Imports into Germany increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Russia (+33.8%), China (+24.7%), Croatia (+10.5%), the UK (+8.7%), Ireland (+8.1%), the Netherlands (+7.3%), Romania (+5.8%) and Lithuania (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +33.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Belgium (-4.0%) and Italy (-9.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Germany (+6.4 p.p.), China (+5.5 p.p.), the Netherlands (+4.2 p.p.), Ireland (+2.9 p.p.) and Russia (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2022, the share of Belgium (-4.3 p.p.) and Italy (-15.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported whole fresh milk worldwide, comprising 23% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 9.3% share of global imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with an 8.9% share.
