Exports by Country

China represented the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 25% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Germany (X tons), the United States (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Hong Kong SAR (X tons), together creating a 28% share of total exports. The following exporters - the Netherlands (X tons), Italy (X tons), Poland (X tons), France (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), Spain (X tons), the UK (X tons) and Canada (X tons) - together made up 20% of total exports.

Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Belgium (+15.8%), Poland (+8.3%), Taiwan (Chinese) (+2.9%), Italy (+2.2%), France (+2.1%) and Canada (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belgium emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +15.8% from 2012-2021. Germany and the Netherlands experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Hong Kong SAR (-1.8%), the United States (-2.0%), the UK (-2.2%) and Spain (-7.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Belgium and China increased by +4.7 and +3.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest paper label supplier worldwide, comprising 20% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 9.4% share of global exports. It was followed by the United States, with a 9.4% share.

In China, paper label exports increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+0.7% per year) and the United States (-0.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average paper label export price amounted to $X per ton, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 6.1%. The global export price peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per ton), while Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Overall, total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +131.1% against 2012 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Mexico was the major importer of labels of paper or paperboard in the world, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was near 49% of total imports in 2021. Belgium (X tons), France (X tons), Spain (X tons), the United States (X tons), Canada (X tons), the UK (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons), Germany (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Poland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Mexico was also the fastest-growing in terms of the labels of paper or paperboard imports, with a CAGR of +23.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Vietnam (+14.8%), Belgium (+12.2%), France (+10.1%), Poland (+9.8%), Spain (+5.3%), Canada (+4.1%), Germany (+3.1%), the United States (+2.6%) and the UK (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. The Netherlands experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Hong Kong SAR (-1.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mexico (+33 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2021, the share of Spain (-1.6 p.p.), Germany (-1.6 p.p.), Canada (-1.8 p.p.), the UK (-2.1 p.p.), the Netherlands (-2.3 p.p.), the United States (-2.7 p.p.) and Hong Kong SAR (-4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Among the main importing countries, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +10.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average paper label import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -4.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the average import price increased by 0.1%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Mexico ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
