The shipments of the seven major exporters of railway or tramway sleepers (cross-ties) of wood, namely Paraguay, Belarus, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Norway, Mexico and Bosnia and Herzegovina, represented more than two-thirds of total export. The following exporters - Canada (X cubic meters), Mozambique (X cubic meters), South Korea (X cubic meters), Switzerland (X cubic meters), Georgia (X cubic meters) and Gabon (X cubic meters) - together made up 18% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by South Korea (with a CAGR of +94.8%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Paraguay ($X), Mexico ($X) and Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 40% share of global exports. Belarus, Australia, Canada, South Korea, Gabon, Switzerland, Georgia, Saudi Arabia, Norway and Mozambique lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 45%.
In terms of the main exporting countries, South Korea, with a CAGR of +99.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average railway sleeper export price stood at $X per cubic meter in 2021, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per cubic meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per cubic meter), while Norway ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

In value terms, railway sleeper imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 14%. Over the period under review, global imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
