The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 23%. The global exports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In general, total exports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -8.6% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Brazil (with a CAGR of +84.0%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest sesame seed supplying countries worldwide were Sudan ($X), India ($X) and Nigeria ($X), together comprising 42% of global exports. Ethiopia, Myanmar, Tanzania, Pakistan, Chad, China, Mozambique, Mali, Burkina Faso and Brazil lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 40%.
Brazil, with a CAGR of +80.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average export price increased by 23% against the previous year. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 18%. Global imports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sesame seed imports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
China represented the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which reached 47% of total imports. Turkey (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 8% share, followed by Japan (7.9%). South Korea (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), Israel (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and the United States (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sesame seed imports, with a CAGR of +10.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+5.0%), Turkey (+4.5%), Saudi Arabia (+1.6%), South Korea (+1.4%), Japan (+1.2%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Israel and the United States experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Vietnam (-2.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+20 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2022, the share of Vietnam (-2.9 p.p.) and Japan (-3.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sesame seed worldwide, comprising 43% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 7.8% share of global imports. It was followed by Japan, with a 7.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in China totaled +12.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Turkey (+6.2% per year) and Japan (+1.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
