In 2022, the global average sour cherry yield reduced to X tons per ha, stabilizing at 2021 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. In value terms, sour cherry exports declined markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the global exports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, Hungary (X tons) and Serbia (X tons) represented the main exporters of sour cherriesaround the world, together accounting for approx. 41% of total exports. Poland (X tons) held a 9.2% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the Czech Republic (5.4%), Lebanon (5.3%) and Moldova (4.7%). The following exporters - Turkey (X tons), Croatia (X tons), Italy (X tons), the United States (X tons), Spain (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons) - together made up 20% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +102.4%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest sour cherry supplying countries worldwide were Serbia ($X), the United States ($X) and Hungary ($X), together accounting for 40% of global exports. Spain, Italy, Poland, Moldova, the Czech Republic, Lebanon, Uzbekistan, Croatia, Bulgaria and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.
Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +125.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average sour cherry export price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -20.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a pronounced descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 30%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In value terms, sour cherry imports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a slight downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 17%. Over the period under review, global imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Germany represented the major importer of sour cherries in the world, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was near 29% of total imports in 2022. Russia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Romania (X tons). All these countries together held near 30% share of total imports. Austria (X tons), Palestine (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), China (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Germany decreased at an average annual rate of -3.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Egypt (+68.9%), Bosnia and Herzegovina (+44.1%), Palestine (+28.3%), Bulgaria (+20.8%), Romania (+18.1%), China (+15.7%), the Netherlands (+12.3%), Italy (+4.2%) and Austria (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Egypt emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +68.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Russia (-3.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Bosnia and Herzegovina (+7.3 p.p.), Egypt (+5.1 p.p.), Romania (+4 p.p.), Palestine (+3.1 p.p.), the Netherlands (+1.9 p.p.), Bulgaria (+1.6 p.p.) and China (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2022, the share of Russia (-5.3 p.p.) and Germany (-11.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest sour cherry importing markets worldwide were Germany ($X), China ($X) and Russia ($X), with a combined 33% share of global imports. Egypt, the Netherlands, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Italy, Romania, Palestine, Austria and Bulgaria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.
Among the main importing countries, Egypt, with a CAGR of +43.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average sour cherry import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 6.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a mild reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 13% against the previous year. Global import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
