After three years of decline, the global sugar beet market increased by 14% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a noticeable descent. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the global market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Sugar Beet Production

In value terms, sugar beet production rose to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 47% against the previous year. The global average sugar beet yield contracted modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against 2021. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the yield increased by 9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average sugar beet yield attained the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The global sugar beet harvested area contracted modestly to X ha in 2022, flattening at 2021. In general, the harvested area recorded a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 7.9% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the global sugar beet harvested area remained at a lower figure.

After four years of growth, shipments abroad of sugar beet decreased by -11.2% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 44%. The global exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, sugar beet exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 24%. The global exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Germany represented the key exporter of sugar beet in the world, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 58% of total exports in 2022. Slovakia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Hungary (X tons) and Belgium (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 31% share of total exports. The Netherlands (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and Latvia (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

Exports from Germany increased at an average annual rate of +25.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Lithuania (+63.4%), Latvia (+26.7%) and Slovakia (+17.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lithuania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +63.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Belgium (-1.2%), Hungary (-4.2%) and the Netherlands (-16.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Germany (+52 p.p.), Slovakia (+11 p.p.), Lithuania (+2.4 p.p.) and Latvia (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while Hungary and the Netherlands saw its share reduced by -5.2% and -11.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest sugar beet supplier worldwide, comprising 37% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Slovakia ($X), with a 12% share of global exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 9.5% share.

In Germany, sugar beet exports expanded at an average annual rate of +19.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Slovakia (+15.4% per year) and the Netherlands (-8.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average sugar beet export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a perceptible setback. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 34%. Over the period under review, global imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, sugar beet imports rose notably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 24%. In 2022, Switzerland (X tons) was the largest importer of sugar beet, creating 40% of total imports. The Czech Republic (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Croatia (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons). All these countries together held near 45% share of total imports. The following importers - Denmark (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) - each recorded an 8% share of total imports.

In value terms, the largest sugar beet importing markets worldwide were Switzerland ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Denmark ($X), with a combined 66% share of global imports.

Denmark, with a CAGR of +133.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average sugar beet import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 3.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 18%.
