In value terms, sulphite wood pulp exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a perceptible curtailment. The global exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Canada (X tons) represented the main exporter of chemical wood pulp (sulphite, other than dissolving grades), making up 68% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Germany (X tons) and the United States (X tons), together committing a 22% share of total exports. Russia (X tons) and Sweden (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Canada was also the fastest-growing in terms of the chemical wood pulp (sulphite, other than dissolving grades) exports, with a CAGR of +8.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Germany (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, the United States (-7.0%), Russia (-8.6%) and Sweden (-14.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The average sulphite wood pulp export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -11.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 8%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Overall, total imports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +81.9% against 2016 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

It was distantly followed by Canada (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Jordan (X tons), together mixing up a 31% share of total imports. Turkey (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), Austria (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Sweden (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to sulphite wood pulp imports into the United States stood at +8.9%. At the same time, Canada (+27.1%), Turkey (+23.9%), Indonesia (+5.9%) and Sweden (+5.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Canada emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +27.1% from 2012-2021. Taiwan (Chinese) experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United States ($X), Germany ($X) and Jordan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 48% of global imports. Indonesia, Turkey, Taiwan (Chinese), Italy, Austria, Canada and Sweden lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 25%.

Among the main importing countries, Turkey, with a CAGR of +21.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average sulphite wood pulp import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -7.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a noticeable setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the average import price increased by 8.7% against the previous year. Global import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
