The global veneer sheet market dropped to $X in 2022, waning by -4.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Global consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, veneer sheet production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 18% against the previous year. Global production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Global veneer sheet exports dropped modestly to X square meters in 2022, which is down by -3.3% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 28%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X square meters, and then dropped modestly in the following year.
In value terms, veneer sheet exports totaled $X in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +40.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 40%. The global exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the four major exporters of veneer sheets and sheets for plywood and other wood sawn lengthwise, namely Russia, China, Gabon and Canada, represented more than third of total export. It was distantly followed by Brazil (X square meters), creating a 5.1% share of total exports. Finland (X square meters), Ukraine (X square meters), Thailand (X square meters), Indonesia (X square meters), Lithuania (X square meters), France (X square meters), the United States (X square meters) and Tanzania (X square meters) took a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Tanzania (with a CAGR of +65.6%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X), Canada ($X) and the United States ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 32% of global exports. Ukraine, Gabon, Russia, Indonesia, France, Finland, Brazil, Lithuania, Tanzania and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.
Tanzania, with a CAGR of +39.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average veneer sheet export price amounted to $X per square meter, growing by 3.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 9.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per square meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per square meter), while Thailand (less than $X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ukraine (+4.7%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports
In 2022, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of veneer sheets and sheets for plywood and other wood sawn lengthwise, when their volume decreased by -10.7% to X square meters. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 48%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X square meters, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, veneer sheet imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +39.0% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
China represented the key importing country with an import of about X square meters, which reached 47% of total imports. It was distantly followed by India (X square meters), mixing up a 6.1% share of total imports. The following importers - Nigeria (X square meters), the Netherlands (X square meters), Italy (X square meters), Latvia (X square meters), South Korea (X square meters), Spain (X square meters), France (X square meters), Taiwan (Chinese) (X square meters), Cambodia (X square meters), Vietnam (X square meters) and Malaysia (X square meters) - together made up 25% of total imports.
Imports into China increased at an average annual rate of +24.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Nigeria (+101.8%), Cambodia (+33.4%), Vietnam (+18.7%), India (+12.3%), the Netherlands (+11.5%), Malaysia (+10.4%), Spain (+5.9%), Italy (+5.2%), Latvia (+4.2%) and France (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +101.8% from 2012-2022. South Korea experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Taiwan (Chinese) (-3.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+33 p.p.), Nigeria (+2.9 p.p.) and Cambodia (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2022, the share of Latvia (-1.6 p.p.), France (-2.2 p.p.), South Korea (-3.6 p.p.) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-5.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest veneer sheet importing markets worldwide were China ($X), India ($X) and Italy ($X), with a combined 21% share of global imports. These countries were followed by Vietnam, Spain, France, Nigeria, Malaysia, Cambodia, South Korea, Taiwan (Chinese), the Netherlands and Latvia, which together accounted for a further 23%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Nigeria, with a CAGR of +78.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average veneer sheet import price amounted to $X per square meter, growing by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a perceptible reduction. Global import price peaked at $X per square meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per square meter), while China ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
