Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +55.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Germany (-1.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the United States, Vietnam, Denmark, Ukraine and Malaysia increased by +8.9, +8.8, +3.1, +1.8 and +1.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the largest wood pellets supplier worldwide, comprising 25% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Canada ($X), with an 8.7% share of global exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 6.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the United States totaled +19.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Canada (+9.8% per year) and Vietnam (+55.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average wood pellets export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 23% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In value terms, wood pellets imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 45%. Global imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In 2022, the UK (X tons), distantly followed by Japan (X tons), South Korea (X tons), Denmark (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the key importers of wood pellets, together mixing up 81% of total imports. Belgium (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Japan (with a CAGR of +50.7%), while imports for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
