The Greek market for anise, badian, fennel and coriander expanded modestly to $X in 2022, increasing by 1.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a slight setback. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 2.3%. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of anise, badian, fennel and coriander, when their volume decreased by -27.5% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 254%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander exports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 184% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Exports by Country

Pakistan (X tons), Cyprus (X tons) and Malta (X tons) were the main destinations of anise, badian, fennel and coriander exports from Greece, together comprising 81% of total exports. Bulgaria, Ireland, Germany and Iraq lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Ireland (with a CAGR of +49.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Cyprus ($X) remains the key foreign market for anise, badian, fennel and coriander exports from Greece, comprising 39% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Pakistan ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Malta, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Cyprus stood at +11.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Pakistan (0.0% per year) and Malta (+31.9% per year).

The average export price for anise, badian, fennel and coriander stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 19% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average export price increased by 63% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Iraq ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ireland (+5.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Greece

Anise, badian, fennel and coriander imports into Greece reached X tons in 2022, growing by 2.8% on 2021. In general, total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -3.9% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander imports rose significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 28%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

India (X tons), Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main suppliers of anise, badian, fennel and coriander imports to Greece, together comprising 46% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Italy (with a CAGR of +78.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest anise, badian, fennel and coriander suppliers to Greece were Italy ($X), India ($X) and Germany ($X), together accounting for 46% of total imports.
