Apricot Market Size in Greece

The Greek apricot market expanded remarkably to $X in 2022, rising by 12% against the previous year. In general, the total consumption indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -15.4% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the average apricot yield in Greece soared to X tons per ha, picking up by 35% against 2021 figures. Overall, the yield, however, continues to indicate a mild slump. Over the period under review, the average apricot yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, after four years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of apricots, when their volume increased by 40% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, recorded a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, apricot exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a slight descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 34% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Romania (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main destinations of apricot exports from Greece, together comprising 58% of total exports. The Czech Republic, Poland, Ukraine, Hungary, Slovakia, Spain, Latvia and Estonia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Hungary (with a CAGR of +26.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for apricot exported from Greece were Romania ($X), Germany ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), with a combined 52% share of total exports. Poland, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Ukraine, Spain, Hungary, Estonia and Latvia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 36%.

Estonia, with a CAGR of +26.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average apricot export price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -17.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 43% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Estonia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Russia (+12.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Greece

After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of apricots decreased by -33.5% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 167% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

In value terms, apricot imports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 176% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of apricot to Greece, accounting for a 81% share of total imports. Moreover, apricot imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Romania (X tons), with a 4.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Spain totaled +11.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+10.0% per year) and Romania (+14.3% per year).

In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of apricots to Greece, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 9.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Romania, with a 4.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Spain stood at +11.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+11.8% per year) and Romania (+32.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average apricot import price amounted to $X per ton, leveling off at the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 10%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+15.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
