Romania (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons) and Cyprus (X tons) were the main destinations of banana and plantain exports from Greece, together accounting for 98% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Romania (+0.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Greece
Banana and plantain imports into Greece declined to X tons in 2022, falling by -2.3% compared with the year before. Overall, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -4.9% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 19%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +7.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Ecuador (X tons) constituted the largest banana and plantain supplier to Greece, with a 88% share of total imports. Moreover, banana and plantain imports from Ecuador exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Costa Rica (X tons), more than tenfold. Colombia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 3.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Ecuador totaled +6.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Costa Rica (-2.9% per year) and Colombia (+23.9% per year).
In value terms, Ecuador ($X) constituted the largest supplier of bananas and plantains to Greece, comprising 89% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Costa Rica ($X), with a 4.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Colombia, with a 3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Ecuador stood at +6.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Costa Rica (-5.5% per year) and Colombia (+19.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average banana and plantain import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 4.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Ecuador ($X per ton) and Colombia ($X per ton), while the price for Guatemala ($X per ton) and Costa Rica ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
