Barley Market Size in Greece
The Greek barley market declined to $X in 2022, which is down by -6.3% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 380% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. Exports by Country
Cyprus (X tons) was the main destination for barley exports from Greece, with a 42% share of total exports. Moreover, barley exports to Cyprus exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Romania (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Bulgaria (X tons), with a 17% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Cyprus totaled -22.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Romania (+28.3% per year) and Bulgaria (-6.9% per year).
In value terms, Cyprus ($X), Romania ($X) and Bulgaria ($X) were the largest markets for barley exported from Greece worldwide, together accounting for 87% of total exports.
Romania, with a CAGR of +35.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
Export Prices by Country
The average barley export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 71% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, barley export price increased by +113.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 75% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to North Macedonia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Cyprus (+6.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Barley Imports
Imports into Greece
In 2022, barley imports into Greece reduced markedly to X tons, declining by -22.1% against the year before. Overall, imports, however, posted a notable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 281% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, barley imports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a perceptible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 311% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped modestly in the following year.
Imports by Country
Bulgaria (X tons), Ukraine (X tons) and North Macedonia (X tons) were the main suppliers of barley imports to Greece, with a combined 93% share of total imports. Romania, France, Germany and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 6.5%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for France (with a CAGR of +38.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Bulgaria ($X) constituted the largest supplier of barley to Greece, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ukraine ($X), with a 26% share of total imports. It was followed by North Macedonia, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Bulgaria totaled +9.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ukraine (+35.4% per year) and North Macedonia (+38.2% per year).

The average barley import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 23% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 38% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
