Chocolate Market Size in Greece

After three years of decline, the Greek chocolate market increased by 27% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Chocolate consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In general, total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -19.0% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 39%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, chocolate exports reduced modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +90.3% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 17%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

Cyprus (X tons), the UK (X tons) and Albania (X tons) were the main destinations of chocolate exports from Greece, together accounting for 31% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the UK (with a CAGR of +45.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for chocolate exported from Greece were Cyprus ($X), Germany ($X) and Albania ($X), with a combined 37% share of total exports.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 9.3%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
