The Greek gravel and crushed stone market expanded markedly to $X in 2021, increasing by 10% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a deep downturn. Gravel and crushed stone consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 43%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Greece
In 2021, the amount of gravel and crushed stone exported from Greece soared to X tons, rising by 17% against the previous year. Overall, exports posted a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 170% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, gravel and crushed stone exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +12.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -1.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 75% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Belgium (X tons), Malta (X tons) and Chile (X tons) were the main destinations of gravel and crushed stone exports from Greece, with a combined 59% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Chile (with a CAGR of +208.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Bulgaria ($X), Belgium ($X) and Romania ($X) constituted the largest markets for gravel and crushed stone exported from Greece worldwide, with a combined 42% share of total exports. Israel, Ukraine, Algeria, Poland, Chile, Albania, the Netherlands, Malta and Morocco lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 44%.
Among the main countries of destination, Chile, with a CAGR of +213.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average gravel and crushed stone export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 9.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a pronounced descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Malta ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Brazil (+70.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Gravel And Crushed Stone
Imports into Greece
After two years of decline, supplies from abroad of gravel and crushed stone increased by 8.5% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports showed prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 298%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, gravel and crushed stone imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 136% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Turkey (X tons) constituted the largest gravel and crushed stone supplier to Greece, with a 74% share of total imports. Moreover, gravel and crushed stone imports from Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Egypt (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Italy (X tons), with a 5.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Turkey totaled +10.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (+0.0% per year) and Italy (+16.1% per year).
In value terms, Turkey ($X) constituted the largest supplier of gravel and crushed stone to Greece, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by New Zealand ($X), with a 9.1% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Turkey amounted to +29.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: New Zealand (+8.2% per year) and the Netherlands (+24.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average gravel and crushed stone import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 6.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the average import price increased by 260%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($X per ton), while the price for Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cyprus (+62.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
