In 2021, the Greek handmade paper market decreased by -3.8% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. In general, consumption saw a slight slump. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In general, exports, however, enjoyed a pronounced increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 446% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, handmade paper exports contracted markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 1,649%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, handmade paper imports reduced slightly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded slight growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 238%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Portugal (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of handmade paper to Greece, with a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, handmade paper imports from Portugal exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Denmark (X tons), with a 4.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Portugal amounted to +39.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+0.4% per year) and Denmark (0.0% per year).
