As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, handmade paper exports contracted markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 1,649%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Italy (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Cyprus (X tons) were the main destinations of handmade paper exports from Greece, together accounting for 85% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +161.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Italy ($X) and Cyprus ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for handmade paper exported from Greece worldwide, with a combined 83% share of total exports.

Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a perceptible decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 300%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, handmade paper imports reduced slightly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded slight growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 238%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Portugal (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of handmade paper to Greece, with a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, handmade paper imports from Portugal exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Denmark (X tons), with a 4.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Portugal amounted to +39.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+0.4% per year) and Denmark (0.0% per year).

In value terms, Portugal ($X) constituted the largest supplier of handmade paper and paperboard to Greece, comprising 58% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Portugal amounted to +30.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-1.0% per year) and the Netherlands (+3.8% per year).

In general, import price indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, handmade paper import price decreased by -38.4% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 90%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Denmark ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+27.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
