The Greek malt market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after three years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a perceptible setback. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

For the fifth year in a row, Greece recorded growth in overseas shipments of malt (not roasted), which increased by 17% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports showed significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 254,447%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, malt exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports posted a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 164,854% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Italy (X tons) was the main destination for malt exports from Greece, accounting for a 50% share of total exports. Moreover, malt exports to Italy exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Albania (X tons), threefold. North Macedonia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Italy stood at +1,448.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Albania (+320.6% per year) and North Macedonia (+9.0% per year).

In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the key foreign market for malt (not roasted) exports from Greece, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Albania ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by North Macedonia, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Italy totaled +1,495.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Albania (+314.6% per year) and North Macedonia (+9.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average malt export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 5.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a abrupt curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the average export price increased by 15%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Cyprus ($X per ton) and Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to North Macedonia ($X per ton) and Albania ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+3.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Greece

Malt imports into Greece soared to X tons in 2021, surging by 18% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, malt imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 27% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of malt to Greece, with a 50% share of total imports. Moreover, malt imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Bulgaria (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Serbia (X tons), with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Germany was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Bulgaria (+43.9% per year) and Serbia (+54.1% per year).

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 11% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were the Netherlands ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton), while the price for Bulgaria ($X per ton) and Germany ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
