The Greek molluscs market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after three years of decline. In general, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, approx. X tons of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) were exported from Greece; rising by 41% compared with the previous year. In general, total exports indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +28.1% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 46%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, molluscs exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, total exports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +16.7% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 55%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Germany (X tons), Cyprus (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main destinations of molluscs exports from Greece, with a combined 63% share of total exports. Albania, Bulgaria, Romania and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Albania (with a CAGR of +193.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for molluscs exported from Greece were Germany ($X), Cyprus ($X) and Italy ($X), with a combined 71% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Bulgaria, Albania, Romania and Spain, which together accounted for a further 23%.
Among the main countries of destination, Albania, with a CAGR of +186.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average molluscs export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 5.5% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Albania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+6.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus), when their volume increased by 42% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2016; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
In value terms, molluscs imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
India (X tons), Spain (X tons) and New Zealand (X tons) were the main suppliers of molluscs imports to Greece, with a combined 51% share of total imports. China, Indonesia, Peru, Morocco, Mauritania, South Africa, Turkey, Italy, Taiwan (Chinese) and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 39%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Peru (with a CAGR of +26.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, India ($X), Spain ($X) and New Zealand ($X) appeared to be the largest molluscs suppliers to Greece, with a combined 44% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Indonesia, Morocco, Mauritania, China, South Africa, Italy, Taiwan (Chinese), Turkey, Peru and the United States, which together accounted for a further 44%.
Peru, with a CAGR of +23.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average molluscs import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 15% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritania ($X per ton), while the price for Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+7.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
