Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
In value terms, newsprint exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports enjoyed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 404%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
Cyprus (X tons) was the main destination for newsprint exports from Greece, with a 80% share of total exports. Moreover, newsprint exports to Cyprus exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Malta (X tons), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Qatar (X tons), with a 3.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Cyprus totaled +17.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malta (+120.2% per year) and Qatar (+3.2% per year).
In value terms, Cyprus ($X) remains the key foreign market for newsprint exports from Greece, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malta ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Qatar, with a 6.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Cyprus amounted to +16.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malta (+139.7% per year) and Qatar (+12.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average newsprint export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -2.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, newsprint export price increased by +24.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 90%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Albania ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Cyprus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+16.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Newsprint Imports
Imports into Greece
In 2022, overseas purchases of newsprint were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, saw a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, newsprint imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a deep reduction. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Belgium (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Russia (X tons) were the main suppliers of newsprint imports to Greece, together accounting for 62% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Belgium (with a CAGR of +70.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, the largest newsprint suppliers to Greece were Austria ($X), Belgium ($X) and Russia ($X), together accounting for 61% of total imports.
Belgium, with a CAGR of +71.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average newsprint import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 42% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Bulgaria ($X per ton) and Sweden ($X per ton), while the price for Canada ($X per ton) and Russia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Slovenia (+5.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
