Potato Market Size in Greece

The Greek potato market soared to $X in 2021, growing by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a perceptible setback. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Potato Production in Greece

In value terms, potato production skyrocketed to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 73%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

The average yield of potatoes in Greece was estimated at X tons per ha in 2021, almost unchanged from the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the yield increased by 14% against the previous year. The potato yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

Exports from Greece

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of potatoes decreased by -32.6% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

In value terms, potato exports contracted markedly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 97%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Romania (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons) were the main destinations of potato exports from Greece, together accounting for 70% of total exports. Albania, North Macedonia, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Kosovo and Cyprus lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Kosovo (with a CAGR of +132.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for potato exported from Greece were Poland ($X), Romania ($X) and Albania ($X), together accounting for 71% of total exports. These countries were followed by Bulgaria, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, North Macedonia, Kosovo and Cyprus, which together accounted for a further 20%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Kosovo, with a CAGR of +144.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average potato export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 41%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to North Macedonia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kosovo (+5.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Greece

In 2021, approx. X tons of potatoes were imported into Greece; falling by -8.1% on the previous year. Overall, total imports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -21.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 51%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In general, total imports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -36.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 48%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Egypt (X tons), France (X tons) and Cyprus (X tons) were the main suppliers of potato imports to Greece, with a combined 81% share of total imports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Bulgaria and Belgium, which together accounted for a further 16%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Italy (with a CAGR of +15.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest potato suppliers to Greece were Egypt ($X), Cyprus ($X) and France ($X), together accounting for 81% of total imports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Belgium and Bulgaria, which together accounted for a further 17%.

Italy, with a CAGR of +8.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by 30% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
