The Greek primary cell and battery market reached $X in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. In value terms, primary cell and battery exports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 24%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Exports by Country

Romania (X units) was the main destination for primary cell and battery exports from Greece, with a 43% share of total exports. Moreover, primary cell and battery exports to Romania exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Cyprus (X units), threefold. Bulgaria (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Romania stood at +31.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cyprus (+17.3% per year) and Bulgaria (+1.5% per year).

In value terms, Romania ($X) remains the key foreign market for primary cells and batteries exports from Greece, comprising 38% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bulgaria ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Cyprus, with a 9.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Romania totaled +30.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bulgaria (+5.5% per year) and Cyprus (+6.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average primary cell and battery export price amounted to $X per unit, falling by -10.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 27%. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Cyprus ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hungary (+9.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports of Primary Cells and Batteries

Imports into Greece

In 2022, imports of primary cells and batteries into Greece shrank to X units, dropping by -11% compared with the previous year. In general, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +35.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, primary cell and battery imports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +14.1% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank in the following year.

In 2022, China (X units) constituted the largest primary cell and battery supplier to Greece, with a 83% share of total imports. Moreover, primary cell and battery imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X units), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Netherlands (X units), with a 3.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China totaled +11.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+16.1% per year) and the Netherlands (-5.3% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of primary cells and batteries to Greece, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Poland, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China totaled +10.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+7.2% per year) and Poland (+47.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average primary cell and battery import price stood at $X per unit in 2022, increasing by 2.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 32% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per unit), while the price for Hong Kong SAR ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+11.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
