Recovered Paper Market Size in Greece

The Greek recovered paper market skyrocketed to $X in 2022, growing by 2,454% against the previous year. Overall, consumption continues to indicate pronounced growth. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Recovered Paper Production in Greece

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +29.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 52% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, recovered paper exports reached $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 104% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

India (X tons) was the main destination for recovered paper exports from Greece, accounting for a 33% share of total exports. Moreover, recovered paper exports to India exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Turkey (X tons), threefold. Indonesia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to India totaled +25.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkey (+47.1% per year) and Indonesia (-9.4% per year).

In value terms, India ($X) remains the key foreign market for recovered paper exports from Greece, comprising 30% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Indonesia ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Turkey, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to India stood at +28.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Indonesia (-5.1% per year) and Turkey (+46.3% per year).

In 2022, the average recovered paper export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 20% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, recovered paper export price increased by +98.5% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 34% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Indonesia ($X per ton) and Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Turkey ($X per ton) and the Netherlands ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+13.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Greece

Recovered paper imports into Greece declined significantly to X tons in 2022, shrinking by -22.3% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded pronounced growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 173% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, recovered paper imports expanded significantly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 146%. Imports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Bulgaria (X tons), North Macedonia (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main suppliers of recovered paper imports to Greece, together accounting for 63% of total imports. Cyprus, Lebanon, Romania, Algeria and Albania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Lebanon (with a CAGR of +2,348.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest recovered paper suppliers to Greece were Bulgaria ($X), North Macedonia ($X) and Italy ($X), together comprising 45% of total imports. Romania, Algeria, Cyprus, Lebanon and Albania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.

Lebanon, with a CAGR of +2,256.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average recovered paper import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 39% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, recovered paper import price increased by +64.2% against 2019 indices. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while the price for Albania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+8.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
