In 2022, the Greek hand stamp market increased by 9.9% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, showed a perceptible downturn. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of stamps for use in the hand decreased by -46% to X units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, saw a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 114%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, hand stamp exports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 122% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports by Country

The UK (X units) was the main destination for hand stamp exports from Greece, accounting for a 51% share of total exports. Moreover, hand stamp exports to the UK exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United States (X units), eightfold. Germany (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the UK amounted to +99.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+27.1% per year) and Germany (+92.5% per year).

In value terms, the UK ($X) remains the key foreign market for stamps for use in the hand exports from Greece, comprising 51% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cyprus ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Italy, with a 5.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the UK totaled +83.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cyprus (+3.6% per year) and Italy (-4.6% per year).

In 2022, the average hand stamp export price amounted to $X per unit, surging by 57% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable decrease. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cyprus ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Nicaragua ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, after three years of decline, there was growth in overseas purchases of stamps for use in the hand, when their volume increased by 4.1% to X units. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 17%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hand stamp imports expanded to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, Turkey (X units) constituted the largest hand stamp supplier to Greece, with a 51% share of total imports. Moreover, hand stamp imports from Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Austria (X units), threefold. China (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Turkey was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Austria (+0.9% per year) and China (-5.8% per year).
