In 2022, overseas shipments of candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year declining trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery exports reached $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 29%. The exports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Germany (X tons), the United States (X tons) and Israel (X tons) were the main destinations of candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery exports from Greece, together comprising 43% of total exports. Poland, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, France, Cyprus, Canada, Romania, Spain, Albania and Bulgaria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 39%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of +27.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery exports from Greece, comprising 31% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Poland, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Germany totaled +6.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+19.0% per year) and Poland (+10.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average export price for candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -6.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 24%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery imports into Greece expanded markedly to X tons in 2022, with an increase of 8.9% on the year before. Overall, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +45.6% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery imports rose significantly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Germany (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main suppliers of candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery imports to Greece, together comprising 47% of total imports. Belgium, Bulgaria, Poland, Italy and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 38%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Bulgaria (with a CAGR of +30.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X), Austria ($X) and Spain ($X) constituted the largest candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery suppliers to Greece, with a combined 49% share of total imports. Italy, Belgium, Poland, Bulgaria and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.
Among the main suppliers, Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +17.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average import price for candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 4.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 16% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+0.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
