In 2021, the Greek synthetic filament tow market increased by 42% to $X, rising for the fifth consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption showed a significant increase. Synthetic filament tow consumption peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

After four years of decline, shipments abroad of synthetic filament tow and staple fibers, not carded or combed increased by 17% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 116%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, synthetic filament tow exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 54%. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Italy (X tons), the United States (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) were the main destinations of synthetic filament tow exports from Greece, with a combined 89% share of total exports. Albania, Cyprus and Egypt lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 7.8%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Albania (with a CAGR of +71.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for synthetic filament tow exported from Greece were the United States ($X), Italy ($X) and Turkey ($X), with a combined 81% share of total exports. Albania, Cyprus and Egypt lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 13%.

Albania, with a CAGR of +66.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a perceptible contraction. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Cyprus ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Egypt (+8.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the amount of synthetic filament tow and staple fibers, not carded or combed imported into Greece skyrocketed to X tons, growing by 17% compared with the previous year. Overall, total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 39% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, synthetic filament tow imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Saudi Arabia (X tons), South Korea (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) were the main suppliers of synthetic filament tow imports to Greece, with a combined 48% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Romania, Thailand, Bulgaria, Indonesia, Italy, Ireland, China and Taiwan (Chinese), which together accounted for a further 42%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Romania (with a CAGR of +59.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest synthetic filament tow suppliers to Greece were Saudi Arabia ($X), South Korea ($X) and China ($X), together comprising 46% of total imports. These countries were followed by Italy, Turkey, Bulgaria, Thailand, Indonesia, Romania, Ireland and Taiwan (Chinese), which together accounted for a further 43%.

Among the main suppliers, Indonesia, with a CAGR of +64.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average synthetic filament tow import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 27% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild shrinkage. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+15.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
