Unmanufactured Tobacco Market Size in Greece

In 2022, the Greek unmanufactured tobacco market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption enjoyed perceptible growth. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Unmanufactured Tobacco Production in Greece

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a mild reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

The average yield of tobacco (unmanufactured) in Greece reduced modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, with a decrease of -2.8% on the year before. Overall, the yield showed a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the yield increased by 34% against the previous year. The unmanufactured tobacco yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the unmanufactured tobacco harvested area in Greece totaled X ha, growing by 6.9% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 16%. The unmanufactured tobacco harvested area peaked at X ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of tobacco (unmanufactured) increased by 3.3% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, exports, however, showed a mild curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 31% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco exports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a perceptible slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Bulgaria (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main destinations of unmanufactured tobacco exports from Greece, with a combined 42% share of total exports. Russia, Egypt, Turkey, Poland, the United States, Algeria, Azerbaijan, Serbia, South Korea and Belarus lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 41%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Azerbaijan (with a CAGR of +198.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Belgium ($X), Bulgaria ($X) and Russia ($X) were the largest markets for unmanufactured tobacco exported from Greece worldwide, together accounting for 44% of total exports. Italy, the United States, Egypt, Turkey, Poland, Algeria, South Korea, Azerbaijan, Belarus and Serbia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 41%.

Among the main countries of destination, Azerbaijan, with a CAGR of +198.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average unmanufactured tobacco export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -8.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Serbia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Serbia (+4.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Greece

In 2022, purchases abroad of tobacco (unmanufactured) increased by 33% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +71.3% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +63.1% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

North Macedonia (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of unmanufactured tobacco imports to Greece, together comprising 43% of total imports. Italy, Serbia, India, Belgium, Bulgaria, Argentina, Bangladesh, Poland, Zimbabwe and Croatia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 44%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Bangladesh (with a CAGR of +316.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, North Macedonia ($X), Brazil ($X) and Italy ($X) constituted the largest unmanufactured tobacco suppliers to Greece, with a combined 47% share of total imports. China, Belgium, Serbia, Bulgaria, India, Poland, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, Argentina and Croatia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 40%.

Bangladesh, with a CAGR of +310.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average unmanufactured tobacco import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 1.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+10.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
