In 2021, the Greek x-ray tube market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a deep setback. X-ray tube consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

For the fourth year in a row, Greece recorded growth in overseas shipments of x-ray tubes, which increased by 106% to X units in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 169%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, x-ray tube exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a buoyant increase. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

France (X units) was the main destination for x-ray tube exports from Greece, with a 76% share of total exports. Moreover, x-ray tube exports to France exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Poland (X units), fivefold. Turkey (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to France stood at +27.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (0.0% per year) and Turkey (0.0% per year).

In value terms, France ($X), Poland ($X) and Turkey ($X) constituted the largest markets for x-ray tube exported from Greece worldwide, together comprising 65% of total exports. These countries were followed by Hungary and Germany, which together accounted for a further 3.9%.

Among the main countries of destination, Hungary, with a CAGR of +52.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average x-ray tube export price stood at $X per unit in 2021, increasing by 3.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average export price increased by 167%. There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to France ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hungary (+42.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2021, purchases abroad of x-ray tubes was finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 83%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, x-ray tube imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the Netherlands (X units) constituted the largest x-ray tube supplier to Greece, accounting for a 53% share of total imports. Moreover, x-ray tube imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X units), twofold. Germany (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the Netherlands stood at +15.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+0.5% per year) and Germany (-15.1% per year).

In value terms, the largest x-ray tube suppliers to Greece were the Netherlands ($X), France ($X) and Germany ($X), together accounting for 90% of total imports. Denmark and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 3.8%.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average import price increased by 27%. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per unit), while the price for Turkey ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
