El Salvador (X tons) was the main destination for lentil exports from Guatemala, with a 95% share of total exports. Moreover, lentil exports to El Salvador exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Honduras (X tons), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to El Salvador totaled +12.0%.
In value terms, El Salvador ($X) remains the key foreign market for lentils exports from Guatemala, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Honduras ($X), with a 14% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to El Salvador amounted to +7.7%.
Export Prices by Country
The average lentil export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -2.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 90%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Honduras ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to El Salvador amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to El Salvador (-3.8%).
Lentil Imports
Imports into Guatemala
In 2022, the amount of lentils imported into Guatemala surged to X tons, with an increase of 38% on 2021 figures. In general, imports continue to indicate a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 107%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
In value terms, lentil imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports enjoyed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 86%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Canada (X tons) constituted the largest lentil supplier to Guatemala, with a 63% share of total imports. Moreover, lentil imports from Canada exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X tons), twofold. Brazil (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Canada stood at +5.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+38.1% per year) and Brazil (-35.3% per year).
In value terms, Canada ($X), the United States ($X) and Brazil ($X) appeared to be the largest lentil suppliers to Guatemala, with a combined 98% share of total imports. Spain lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 1.6%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Spain, with a CAGR of +190.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average lentil import price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -15.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 44% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell dramatically in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while the price for Canada ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+36.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
