Malt Market Size in Guatemala
The Guatemalan malt market rose sharply to $X in 2022, with an increase of 14% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, consumption, however, showed a remarkable increase. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Exports from Guatemala
In 2022, overseas shipments of malt decreased by -90.7% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 185,367%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then shrank notably in the following year.
In value terms, malt exports declined significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 135,079% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted sharply in the following year.
Exports by Country
Honduras (X tons) was the main destination for malt exports from Guatemala, accounting for a 99.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Costa Rica (X kg), with less than 0.1% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Honduras was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Costa Rica (-55.3% per year) and El Salvador (-18.8% per year).
In value terms, Honduras ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for malt exports from Guatemala, comprising 100% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Costa Rica ($X), with a 0.1% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Honduras was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Costa Rica (-38.8% per year) and El Salvador (-19.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average malt export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 12% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a deep reduction. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was El Salvador ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Honduras ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Costa Rica (+50.7%).
Malt Imports
Imports into Guatemala
After three years of growth, overseas purchases of malt decreased by -7.5% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 104%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, malt imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 105% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Belgium (X tons), Argentina (X tons) and Uruguay (X tons) were the main suppliers of malt imports to Guatemala, with a combined 22% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Argentina (with a CAGR of +93.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest malt suppliers to Guatemala were Uruguay ($X), Belgium ($X) and Argentina ($X), with a combined 27% share of total imports. Germany, the Netherlands, Colombia, Sweden, Poland, Panama, Lithuania, Canada and France lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.
Among the main suppliers, Panama, with a CAGR of +105.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average malt import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 33% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, malt import price increased by +75.0% against 2018 indices. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uruguay ($X per ton), while the price for France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+61.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
