In 2022, shipments abroad of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) increased by 115% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, exports saw a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 164% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, paper and paperboard exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 246%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Nicaragua (X tons) was the main destination for paper and paperboard exports from Guatemala, accounting for a 74% share of total exports. Moreover, paper and paperboard exports to Nicaragua exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Honduras (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by El Salvador (X tons), with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Nicaragua totaled +58.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Honduras (+21.0% per year) and El Salvador (+7.4% per year).
In value terms, Nicaragua ($X) remains the key foreign market for paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) exports from Guatemala, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by El Salvador ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by the Dominican Republic, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Nicaragua totaled +59.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: El Salvador (+11.0% per year) and the Dominican Republic (+73.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average paper and paperboard export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 6.9% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, paper and paperboard export price decreased by -8.5% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 33%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Dominican Republic ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Honduras ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Dominican Republic (+15.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Guatemala
After three years of decline, supplies from abroad of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) increased by 85% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible shrinkage. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, paper and paperboard imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +92.0% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest paper and paperboard supplier to Guatemala, accounting for a 54% share of total imports. Moreover, paper and paperboard imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Mexico (X tons), threefold. The United States (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 17% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to +7.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mexico (+2.6% per year) and the United States (-3.5% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) to Guatemala, comprising 58% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mexico ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by the United States, with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China totaled +9.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mexico (+4.1% per year) and the United States (-2.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average paper and paperboard import price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -15.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, paper and paperboard import price increased by +25.9% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 42% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined dramatically in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for El Salvador ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Canada (+17.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
