Overall, exports showed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 341% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pigments, opacifiers and colours exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 236%. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

El Salvador (X tons) was the main destination for pigments, opacifiers and colours exports from Guatemala, accounting for a 90% share of total exports. Moreover, pigments, opacifiers and colours exports to El Salvador exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Spain (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to El Salvador totaled +8.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Spain (-4.4% per year) and Nicaragua (+2.6% per year).

In value terms, El Salvador ($X) remains the key foreign market for pigments, opacifiers and colours for ceramics, enamelling or glass exports from Guatemala, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Spain ($X), with a 9.3% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to El Salvador totaled +13.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Spain (-7.7% per year) and Nicaragua (+0.0% per year).

Imports into Guatemala

After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of pigments, opacifiers and colours for ceramics, enamelling or glass decreased by -25.1% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 47% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined sharply in the following year.

In value terms, pigments, opacifiers and colours imports amounted to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +77.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In 2022, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest pigments, opacifiers and colours supplier to Guatemala, accounting for a 86% share of total imports. Moreover, pigments, opacifiers and colours imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Spain stood at +14.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+5.6% per year) and Mexico (+11.4% per year).
