Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports into Guatemala

In 2022, supplies from abroad of polyphenols and phenol-alcohols increased by 9% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 63%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, polyphenols and phenol-alcohols imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +63.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Mexico (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of polyphenols and phenol-alcohols to Guatemala, accounting for a 61% share of total imports. Moreover, polyphenols and phenol-alcohols imports from Mexico exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X tons), threefold. The Netherlands (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Mexico amounted to -2.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+21.7% per year) and the Netherlands (+79.0% per year).

In value terms, Mexico ($X) constituted the largest supplier of polyphenols and phenol-alcohols to Guatemala, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 9.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Mexico stood at +6.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+18.1% per year) and China (+40.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average polyphenols and phenol-alcohols import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average import price increased by 46% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
