Tomato Market Size in Guatemala

The Guatemalan tomato market fell to $X in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a buoyant expansion. Tomato consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell modestly in the following year.

Tomato Production in Guatemala

In value terms, tomato production contracted slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the production volume increased by 84%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the average yield of tomatoes in Guatemala totaled X tons per ha, approximately mirroring the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. In value terms, tomato exports stood at $X in 2022. In general, total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +20.0% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 68% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

El Salvador (X tons) was the main destination for tomato exports from Guatemala, accounting for a 84% share of total exports. Moreover, tomato exports to El Salvador exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United States (X tons), sixfold.

In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for tomatoes exports from Guatemala, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by El Salvador ($X), with a 25% share of total exports.

In 2022, the average tomato export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 12% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the average export price increased by 90% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to El Salvador totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+7.0%).

Imports into Guatemala

For the fourth consecutive year, Guatemala recorded growth in purchases abroad of tomatoes, which increased by 20% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 466% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, tomato imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 643%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Honduras (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of tomato to Guatemala, accounting for a 89% share of total imports. Moreover, tomato imports from Honduras exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Mexico (X tons), eightfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Honduras stood at +24.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mexico (+72.6% per year) and the United States (-43.6% per year).

In value terms, Mexico ($X) constituted the largest supplier of tomatoes to Guatemala, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Honduras ($X), with a 30% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Mexico amounted to +111.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Honduras (+23.6% per year) and the United States (-34.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average tomato import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 118% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a resilient expansion. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while the price for Honduras ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
