Vegetable Product Market Size in Guatemala

The Guatemalan vegetable product market amounted to $X in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year. The average yield of vegetable products in Guatemala declined slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, approximately equating 2021. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 21%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 466%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, vegetable product exports reduced notably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 826% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Belize (X tons), Japan (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main destinations of vegetable product exports from Guatemala, together accounting for 96% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of +227.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Japan ($X) remains the key foreign market for vegetable products exports from Guatemala, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Spain ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by the United States, with a 2.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Japan totaled +37.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Spain (+101.0% per year) and the United States (+69.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average vegetable product export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -54.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate moderate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 221% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was El Salvador ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Belize ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to El Salvador (+20.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Vegetable Product Imports

Imports into Guatemala

In 2022, the amount of vegetable products imported into Guatemala reduced markedly to X kg, shrinking by -97.6% compared with the previous year. Overall, imports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 39,678%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, vegetable product imports shrank notably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 21,124% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X kg) constituted the largest vegetable product supplier to Guatemala, with a 81% share of total imports. Moreover, vegetable product imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X kg), sixfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China amounted to -55.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (-17.8% per year) and Panama (+34.3% per year).

In value terms, China ($X), Panama ($X) and the United States ($X) were the largest vegetable product suppliers to Guatemala, with a combined 99% share of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Panama, with a CAGR of +54.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

Import Prices by Country

The average vegetable product import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 59% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average import price increased by 1,486% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Panama ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
