Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, aluminium bar exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 148%. The exports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Thailand (X tons), China (X tons) and Israel (X tons) were the main destinations of aluminium bar exports from Hong Kong SAR, together accounting for 59% of total exports. South Africa, Morocco, Brazil and Costa Rica lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Morocco (with a CAGR of +118.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average aluminium bar export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 7.5% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, aluminium bar export price increased by +4.3% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of aluminium bars, rods and profiles was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a deep downturn. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, aluminium bar imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt decrease. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of aluminium bar to Hong Kong SAR, with a 65% share of total imports. Moreover, aluminium bar imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Singapore (X tons), eightfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), with a 4.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China amounted to -13.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Singapore (-12.2% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-13.9% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of aluminium bars, rods and profiles to Hong Kong SAR, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($X), with a 6.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 6.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China amounted to -13.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (-4.8% per year) and Singapore (-15.5% per year).

In 2021, the average aluminium bar import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 2.3% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
