In 2022, supplies from abroad of chocolate and other food preparations containing cocoa increased by 8.8% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, saw a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, chocolate imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 59% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, France (X tons) constituted the largest chocolate supplier to Hong Kong SAR, accounting for a 38% share of total imports. Moreover, chocolate imports from France exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Belgium (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Malaysia (X tons), with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from France stood at +10.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (-6.9% per year) and Malaysia (+21.5% per year).
In value terms, France ($X) constituted the largest supplier of chocolate and other food preparations containing cocoa to Hong Kong SAR, comprising 64% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by the United States, with a 9.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from France amounted to +17.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (-8.0% per year) and the United States (+3.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average chocolate import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last decade.
