For the tenth year in a row, Hong Kong SAR recorded growth in overseas shipments of electronic chips, which increased by 49% to X units in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a significant increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, electronic chip exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed a resilient expansion. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
China (X units) was the main destination for electronic chip exports from Hong Kong SAR, accounting for a 86% share of total exports. Moreover, electronic chip exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Taiwan (Chinese) (X units), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to China stood at +20.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (+21.9% per year) and Vietnam (+49.6% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) remains the key foreign market for electronic chips exports from Hong Kong SAR, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), with a 3.4% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to China amounted to +15.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (+12.5% per year) and Vietnam (+40.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average electronic chip export price stood at $X per unit in 2021, falling by -7.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 6.3% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (-4.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2021, purchases abroad of electronic chips decreased by -15.3% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X units in 2020, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, electronic chip imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw buoyant growth. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Taiwan (Chinese) (X units), China (X units) and Singapore (X units) were the main suppliers of electronic chip imports to Hong Kong SAR, together accounting for 70% of total imports. These countries were followed by Malaysia, South Korea, the Philippines, Vietnam and Japan, which together accounted for a further 24%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +56.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X), Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) and Singapore ($X) appeared to be the largest electronic chip suppliers to Hong Kong SAR, together comprising 69% of total imports. South Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Japan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +69.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average electronic chip import price amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per unit), while the price for the Philippines ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
