In 2022, the Hong Kong manuka market was finally on the rise to reach $X after four years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, manuka imports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 30%. Imports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of manuka to Hong Kong SAR, accounting for a 57% share of total imports. Moreover, manuka imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, New Zealand (X tons), eightfold. Australia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at +1.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: New Zealand (-16.3% per year) and Australia (+0.2% per year).

In value terms, the largest manuka suppliers to Hong Kong SAR were China ($X), New Zealand ($X) and Australia ($X), with a combined 67% share of total imports. Japan, Spain, Germany, the United States, Taiwan (Chinese), Thailand, France, Austria, Turkey and Singapore lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.

Among the main suppliers, Turkey, with a CAGR of +51.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average manuka import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -20.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a slight decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($X per ton), while the price for Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
