The Philippines (X tons) was the main destination for onion and shallot exports from Hong Kong SAR, with a 80% share of total exports. Moreover, onion and shallot exports to the Philippines exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Malaysia (X tons), sevenfold. In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of onions and shallots, when their volume decreased by -81.4% to X tons. Overall, imports recorded a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 259%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, onion and shallot imports shrank markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a mild reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 443% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped markedly in the following year.
Imports by Country
The Netherlands (X tons), New Zealand (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of onion and shallot imports to Hong Kong SAR, with a combined 75% share of total imports. Australia, the United States, Japan and India lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Japan (with a CAGR of +15.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
