In 2021, supplies from abroad of sweet biscuits decreased by -25.3% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after eight years of growth. Overall, total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -26.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sweet biscuit imports contracted rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
China (X tons), Japan (X tons) and the UK (X tons) were the main suppliers of sweet biscuit imports to Hong Kong SAR, with a combined 62% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Denmark, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Taiwan (Chinese), Singapore, Italy and Macao SAR, which together accounted for a further 30%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Denmark (with a CAGR of +55.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
