Asparagus Market Size in Hungary

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the Hungarian asparagus market, when its value increased by 13% to $X. In general, consumption enjoyed a buoyant expansion. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, asparagus exports dropped dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a pronounced decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 27%. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Germany (X tons) was the main destination for asparagus exports from Hungary, accounting for a 48% share of total exports. Moreover, asparagus exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Switzerland (X tons), twofold. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a temperate expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 86% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, asparagus imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed perceptible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 109%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Austria (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main suppliers of asparagus imports to Hungary, with a combined 72% share of total imports. The Czech Republic, Belgium, Slovakia, the Netherlands and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Belgium (with a CAGR of +58.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Austria ($X) constituted the largest supplier of asparagus to Hungary, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 23% share of total imports. It was followed by Belgium, with a 9.5% share.
