Banana And Plantain Market Size in Hungary

The Hungarian banana and plantain market skyrocketed to $X in 2022, surging by 15% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Overall, the total consumption indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -5.2% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Hungary

In 2022, approx. X tons of bananas and plantains were exported from Hungary; leveling off at the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed temperate growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 87% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

In value terms, banana and plantain exports rose sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed mild growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 94% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

The Czech Republic (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Croatia (X tons) were the main destinations of banana and plantain exports from Hungary, with a combined 92% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Croatia (with a CAGR of +144.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for banana and plantain exported from Hungary were the Czech Republic ($X), Romania ($X) and Croatia ($X), together comprising 91% of total exports.

Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Austria (+2.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Hungary

In 2022, the amount of bananas and plantains imported into Hungary expanded rapidly to X tons, increasing by 7.6% on the previous year. Overall, total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +79.7% against 2014 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 22%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, banana and plantain imports expanded notably to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Slovakia (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main suppliers of banana and plantain imports to Hungary, together accounting for 59% of total imports. Poland, Romania, Italy, Slovenia, the Netherlands, Austria, France and the Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 41%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Romania (with a CAGR of +62.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average banana and plantain import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 4.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a slight reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the average import price increased by 11% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Austria ($X per ton) and Poland ($X per ton), while the price for Slovakia ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Slovenia (+1.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
