Barley Market Size in Hungary

The Hungarian barley market fell to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -6.7% against the previous year. In general, consumption continues to indicate a perceptible decrease. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Barley Production in Hungary

In value terms, barley production dropped slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 21%. Barley production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The average yield of barley in Hungary contracted to X tons per ha in 2022, with a decrease of -5.4% on the previous year's figure. In 2022, shipments abroad of barley decreased by -1.3% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports, however, recorded a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 1,436% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, barley exports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +100.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 65% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

Italy (X tons) was the main destination for barley exports from Hungary, with a 50% share of total exports. Moreover, barley exports to Italy exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Austria (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Romania (X tons), with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Italy totaled +20.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Austria (+8.7% per year) and Romania (+2.0% per year).

In value terms, Italy ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for barley exports from Hungary, comprising 51% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Austria ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Romania, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Italy stood at +17.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Austria (+5.0% per year) and Romania (-1.6% per year).

In 2022, the average barley export price amounted to $X per ton, approximately equating the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average export price increased by 769% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+1.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was decline in purchases abroad of barley, when their volume decreased by -1.5% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 185%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, barley imports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 92%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Slovakia (X tons) constituted the largest barley supplier to Hungary, accounting for a 47% share of total imports. Moreover, barley imports from Slovakia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Austria (X tons), twofold. Romania (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Slovakia stood at -1.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Austria (-0.7% per year) and Romania (+21.1% per year).

In value terms, Slovakia ($X), Austria ($X) and Romania ($X) constituted the largest barley suppliers to Hungary, together accounting for 71% of total imports. Ukraine, Croatia, France, the Czech Republic, Germany and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Ukraine, with a CAGR of +113.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average barley import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 67% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
