Bituminous Mixtures Market Size in Hungary

In 2021, the Hungarian bituminous mixtures market decreased by -50.1% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, consumption, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. Bituminous mixtures consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, bituminous mixtures production reduced remarkably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a perceptible expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 162%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

Exports from Hungary

In 2021, approx. X tons of bituminous mixtures were exported from Hungary; which is down by -1.6% compared with the previous year. In general, exports saw a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 1,064% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, bituminous mixtures exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 1,399%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Bulgaria (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Slovakia (X kg) were the main destinations of bituminous mixtures exports from Hungary, together comprising 71% of total exports. These countries were followed by Romania, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and the Netherlands, which together accounted for a further 28%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Bosnia and Herzegovina (with a CAGR of +51.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Bulgaria ($X), Austria ($X) and Romania ($X) constituted the largest markets for bituminous mixtures exported from Hungary worldwide, with a combined 73% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Slovakia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and the Netherlands, which together accounted for a further 26%.

Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a CAGR of +50.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average bituminous mixtures export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 19% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a moderate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 91%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+152.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Hungary

In 2021, overseas purchases of bituminous mixtures decreased by -40% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports saw a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 177%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, bituminous mixtures imports contracted remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a slight increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 211% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Germany (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main suppliers of bituminous mixtures imports to Hungary, with a combined 66% share of total imports. These countries were followed by France, Austria, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands and Slovakia, which together accounted for a further 28%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for France (with a CAGR of +15.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of bituminous mixtures to Hungary, comprising 36% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Austria, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Germany amounted to +14.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Czech Republic (+7.1% per year) and Austria (-14.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average bituminous mixtures import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 32% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +8.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
