Brewing Dregs Market Size in Hungary

In 2022, the Hungarian brewing dregs market decreased by -9.3% to $X, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. In general, consumption, however, saw a deep contraction. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, brewing dregs production plummeted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the production volume increased by 6.9%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of brewing or distilling dregs and waste increased by 2% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, exports continue to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 50%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, brewing dregs exports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 56%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main destinations of brewing dregs exports from Hungary, with a combined 51% share of total exports. Slovakia, Croatia, Poland, Romania, Serbia and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Romania (with a CAGR of +75.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Italy ($X) and Poland ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for brewing dregs exported from Hungary worldwide, together comprising 56% of total exports. Croatia, Austria, Romania, Serbia, the Netherlands and Slovakia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 36%.

Among the main countries of destination, Romania, with a CAGR of +81.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average brewing dregs export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 6.5% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, brewing dregs export price increased by +83.1% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Hungary

Brewing dregs imports into Hungary declined to X tons in 2022, reducing by -8.7% against 2021 figures. In general, total imports indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +13.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 77%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, brewing dregs imports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 45%. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Slovakia (X tons) constituted the largest brewing dregs supplier to Hungary, accounting for a 55% share of total imports. Moreover, brewing dregs imports from Slovakia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Slovenia (X tons), threefold. Austria (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Slovakia totaled -1.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Slovenia (+1,882.6% per year) and Austria (+0.6% per year).

In value terms, Slovakia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of brewing or distilling dregs and waste to Hungary, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Austria ($X), with a 25% share of total imports. It was followed by Croatia, with a 5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Slovakia was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Austria (-0.7% per year) and Croatia (+58.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average brewing dregs import price amounted to $X per ton, approximately mirroring the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a slight reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 33%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Slovenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+17.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
