Over the period under review, the total production indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +9.4% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 33%. Trailer and semi-trailer production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Hungary

In 2022, the amount of cargo trailers and semi-trailers exported from Hungary expanded slightly to X units, rising by 4% on the previous year's figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, trailer and semi-trailer exports stood at $X in 2022. In general, total exports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +22.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 27%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Germany (X units), Ukraine (X units) and Serbia (X units) were the main destinations of trailer and semi-trailer exports from Hungary, together accounting for 42% of total exports. Poland, the UK, Romania, the Czech Republic, Austria, Italy, France, Latvia, Moldova and Slovakia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 40%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Italy (with a CAGR of +89.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for trailer and semi-trailer exported from Hungary were Germany ($X), Poland ($X) and Austria ($X), together comprising 52% of total exports. The Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia, Italy, Serbia, the UK, France, Ukraine, Latvia and Moldova lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 32%.

Among the main countries of destination, Italy, with a CAGR of +187.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 25%. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Ukraine ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+51.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Hungary

In 2022, overseas purchases of cargo trailers and semi-trailers increased by 11% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after four years of decline. In general, total imports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +35.9% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 74% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X units in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, trailer and semi-trailer imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +60.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 40%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Germany (X units) constituted the largest supplier of trailer and semi-trailer to Hungary, accounting for a 55% share of total imports. Moreover, trailer and semi-trailer imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Poland (X units), threefold. Serbia (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany stood at +6.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+21.0% per year) and Serbia (+3.0% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of cargo trailers and semi-trailers to Hungary, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Poland ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Austria, with a 7.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Germany was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+36.0% per year) and Austria (+8.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average trailer and semi-trailer import price stood at $X per unit in 2022, rising by 7.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 13%. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per unit), while the price for Serbia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Austria (+16.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
