In 2022, the Hungarian cherry market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 96%. Cherry production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
In 2022, the average cherry yield in Hungary declined modestly to X tons per ha, remaining stable against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cherry yield increased by +1.4% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the yield increased by 102% against the previous year. Exports from Hungary
In 2022, exports of cherries from Hungary shrank rapidly to X tons, declining by -77.1% on the year before. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a perceptible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 1,282%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, cherry exports dropped rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw measured growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 1,395%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Lithuania (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main destinations of cherry exports from Hungary, together accounting for 77% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Slovakia (with a CAGR of +50.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Lithuania ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for cherries exports from Hungary, comprising 48% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Slovakia ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Lithuania amounted to +38.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovakia (+53.2% per year) and the Netherlands (+23.8% per year).

The average cherry export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -35.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average export price increased by 82% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted markedly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Austria (+14.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Hungary
In 2022, purchases abroad of cherries decreased by -97.6% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 3,269% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Slovakia (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Moldova (X tons) were the main suppliers of cherry imports to Hungary, together accounting for 80% of total imports. Spain, Italy and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 19%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Italy (with a CAGR of +84.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Slovakia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of cherries to Hungary, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Spain ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Poland, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Slovakia amounted to -28.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+33.1% per year) and Poland (+13.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average cherry import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 82%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Moldova ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
