The average yield of chilies and peppers (green) in Hungary dropped slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against 2021. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, chili and pepper exports dropped rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 26%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

Germany (X tons) was the main destination for chili and pepper exports from Hungary, with a 55% share of total exports. Moreover, chili and pepper exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Slovakia (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Czech Republic (X tons), with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Germany amounted to -2.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovakia (+4.5% per year) and the Czech Republic (-0.5% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for chilies and peppers (green) exports from Hungary, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Slovakia ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Germany was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovakia (+10.2% per year) and the Czech Republic (+4.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average chili and pepper export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -4.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 18%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced slightly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Switzerland (+6.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Hungary
In 2022, supplies from abroad of chilies and peppers (green) decreased by -28.4% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, posted prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 64% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then shrank markedly in the following year.
In value terms, chili and pepper imports declined dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 125%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell notably in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest chili and pepper supplier to Hungary, with a 48% share of total imports. Moreover, chili and pepper imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Egypt (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Turkey (X tons), with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Spain totaled +17.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (+70.4% per year) and Turkey (+10.3% per year).
In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of chilies and peppers (green) to Hungary, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Spain stood at +17.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (+81.6% per year) and Turkey (+12.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average chili and pepper import price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -4.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 37% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
